Jefferson, October 1998

29-year-old Danish guitarist Dan Klarskov has issued his debut cd - "Dan Klarskov & The Honeydrippers". The cd was recorded live in the studio during two days in April 1998.

Klarskov has played with such musicians as Kenn Lending, Diz Watson, Earl Thomas, Ole Frimer and Sven Zetterberg, just to name a few. Sven is also one of the musical sources of inspiration to whom Klarskov sends his thanks on the cd cover.

Apart from Sven, Klarskov's great guitar hero seems to be
T-Bone Walker. He has a soft, round guitar sound similar to that of Walker, and jazz harmonies don't frighten him either. Klarskov doesn't copy Walker, but if you like Walker I'm sure you'll also like Klarskov.

He is supported by a highly competent band on drums, double bass, piano and organ. Apart from Klarskov himself, organ player Peter Lapiki gets the most solo space. There are also several solos by the guests Anders Gaarmand on tenor sax and Ole "Fessor" Lindgreen on trombone.

The latter's trombone on Champion Jack Dupree's "My Baby's Comin' Back" is a joy to listen to. Hans Knudsen's piano fills on the same tune and on Roy Milton's "Night and Day" should also be noted.

In addition to the ones mentioned above Klarskov has chosen tunes by Louis Armstrong, Big Joe Turner, Count Basie, Joe Liggins and four by T-Bone Walker. However, Klarskov has rearranged all the tunes, and his arrangements are imaginative and talented.
For example, one of the Walker tunes is somewhere between ska and reggae.
Apart from that, he has combined jazz and blues in a brilliant way along the lines of his great idol T-Bone Walker.

To sum it up: A very fine debut cd from Dan Klarskov.
